Botox

Botox is an FDA approved approach to relax muscles that cause skin wrinkles. Botox blocks the chemical signal from the nerve to the muscle, inhibiting muscle contraction. When the muscle doesn't contract or move, the skin above the muscle stays relaxed and unwrinkled.

Botox treatments are easy, and safe, allowing you to return to daily activity immediately after your treatment. After treatment the doctors recommend that you actively use the muscles in the treated areas for a couple hours, and that you not lie down or take a nap within 4-6 hours after the treatment, for best effect.

Frown lines
Some people have 'permanent' creases between their eyebrows, caused by years of muscle contraction in that area. Botox relaxes the muscles that form these frown lines, and allow the face to have a pleasant, relaxed appearance, instead of a stressed, unhappy appearance.

Forehead wrinkles / Crows Feet
Botox is wonderful for use over the forehead, to decrease the deep furrows that form over time in some people. It softens 'crows feet' which sometimes form on the sides of the eyes from squinting over the years.

Mouth wrinkles / Chin Puckers
Botox can also be used to diminish radial lines around the mouth. These are the lines that can allow lipstick to 'bleed' into them from the lip, and that can add years of age to a person's appearance. Botox can also help smoothen a puckered, or 'cobblestoned' chin.

Sweaty Palms / Sweaty Arm Pits
Botox may also be used to inhibit or even temporarily stop sweating of the palms and arm pits. One set of injections can keep palms or pits dry for 3-18 months.

Unwanted side effects that occassionally occur with Botox injections are muscles that become too weak, temporarily causing droopy eyelid or lip, or temporary double-vision.

Botox treatments last an average of approximately 3 months. Many people find that they need less Botox over time, to achieve the desired affect. This may be because the muscles become less strong over time, causing fewer wrinkles. The Botox likely helps to 'retrain' our muscles, so we don't have the tendency to make unconscious expressions during sleep or while awake, as might have been done before Botox.

Some people need more Botox than others to obtain the desired effects. Very infrequently a person is 'immune' to the effects of Botox. This is thought to possibly be a result of having eaten tainted canned vegetables sometime earlier in life, or for reasons not yet understood.
